“Get your hands offa me! I’ve got rights! I’m a veteran!” Old man B turned his head and saw a large Hispanic man with a thick mustache staring him down. He looked like a cross between a younger Edward James Olmos and a linebacker. His BNSF hat was worn and dirty, and the moonlight caught his security badge.

“Mister, I don’t care who you are. You’re trespassing, so you’re coming with me. We’ll see if the Sioux Falls police want to chat with you.” Old man B kept looking back at the fence as the bull drug him away.

Will Hetfield walked slower the further he walked up the stairs. His relationship with Captain Hale wasn’t the best, but he had been on good terms of late. It was a bit odd for the Captain to be working this late, but all the officers he saw on the way up told him that he was in for a talking to. He walked down the row of desks, and the blinds were closed on the windows of the captain’s office. That was usually code for the captain about to chew somebody out. He took a deep breath and knocked on the glass. “Come in Detective” came the captain’s voice. Will didn’t detect anger in it, but rather the sound of someone tired and frustrated.

The first thing Will noticed when he walked in was the captain. He was sitting at his desk, which was messier than Will had ever seen it. The captain had files everywhere, his pens were littered across the desk and floor, and his laptop and desktop were both on and running. “You wanted to see me captain?” Hale looked up, but before he could talk, someone else did.

“Detective Hetfield, what have you found at the crime scene?” Will turned his head to the right. Seated on two chairs were two people he’d never seen before. One was an Asian-looking male with short black hair. He was wearing a black suit, and he had a closed laptop on the chair next to him. The other was a female in her late 30s, and her black pantsuit looked like it came from the same store as the man’s. She had red hair up in a bun and her wire rim glasses sat low on her nose. Her laptop was open, but she closed it quickly. Will briefly saw some kind of logo reflected in her glasses, but it was one he wasn’t familiar with.

“That depends. Who are you, and what are you looking for?”

“Will, please” the captain almost moaned, “they’re from the government. They have some questions about the apartment you searched.”

“Right right. So, what do you want to know?”

“First off” the woman said as she stood up, “why did you leave?”

Will put his hands on his hips. “I had a hunch. I heard a car was being looked into, so I went with my gut. Did you talk to your friend? Is that how you know I went to check out the car?”

The man and woman exchanged glances. “Friend?” the man said, as he stood up and walked right up to Will, getting only inches from his face. “Talk. Who else did you talk to?”
