Just a quick note

The summary for part one has been completed. It’s an overview for new people finding their way here, or if anyone wants to recap major events so far. I’ll be adding them every twenty eight posts or so, along with a new “Cliff(hanger) Notes” bio.

Thanks for clicking by. :)

Will’s head backed away for a moment, then closed in even closer.

“One of my officers told me an FBI agent was in town asking questions about a Gerrard Dinkley. Is that who you are looking for?” Will stared him right in the eyes, but neither man blinked. The man backed away slowly and walked slowly around the captain’s desk. Will watched him, but heard the woman speak next.

“You’ll have to excuse Garrett. This is just a very sensitive issue. Detective Hetfield, do you know why the FBI was looking for Gerrard Dinkley?”

Will paused for a moment. “Pardon my answering with a question, but I’m guessing you two aren’t FBI.”

“Mr. Garrett is with the NGA, and I’m with the NRO.”

“The what and the what?”

“Mr. Garrett works for the National Geo-spatial Intelligence Agency, and I work with the National Reconnaissance Office. We also both work in coordination with the CIA, and I think you know about them.”

Will’s face crinkled into a frown. “Don’t go there.”

Garrett walked to the other side of the captain. “Look, we only want to know if you recovered any data from the apartment. Computers, discs, anything.”

Will glared at Garrett, then at the captain. “Look, all media and computer drives were missing from the apartment. If it was so important, why didn’t you have the place under surveillance, or why show up now?”

“Detective” the woman said, “we have our reasons. Have you recovered any prints? Do you have any leads?”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t catch your name.”

“You can call me Ms. Lewis.”

“Well Ms. Lewis, I have some leads to check, and you’ll have your prints as soon as I get authorization to cooperate.”

Captain Hale stood up. “Dammit Will! They have our full cooperation. Do I make myself clear, or do I pull you off this case right here, right now and give you a paid vacation?” Will started at the captain for a few moments, then turned to the door.

“I’ll have Tina get you any prints we find as soon as I can.” He swung open the door and slammed it. The glass quivered from the impact, and the blinds swung up and rattled against the glass. Captain Hale sat back down.

Garrett walked back over to the chair he was sitting in a few minutes ago. “Why didn’t you pull him off the case? He’s a variable we don’t need.”

Hale spun his chair towards Garrett. “I kept him because he’s your best shot at cracking this case. And, since your case involves one of my officers being gunned down, it’s a case I very much want to crack.”

Mabel Gravley rocked back and forth. She sat in her recliner with her legs up and her arms locked around them. She couldn’t stop thinking about what happened earlier. She wanted to call the police, but she remembered what the men told her. They just took some discs, no big deal. It’s not worth risking your life. She slowly uncurled and exhaled for a long time. She stood up, her shoulders aching from indecision. Before she could get to her fridge, she heard a noise from upstairs. It was the familiar noise of a lock fighting with someone who didn’t have a key. She looked at her phone. She took a deep breath and walked right to it. Not this time she thought to herself as she dialed 911.
